TRANSFER TALK
Tottenham management are reported to be trying to hijack the move of 24-year-old (25 next February) Genoa left-footed winger or attacking midfielder Diego Laxalt. The Uruguayan international is close to being signed by fellow Serie A side Atalanta. He is under contract until 2018 and is also being tracked by Newcastle United, Everton, Juventus and Liverpool.
Having seen Josh Onomah sign a new contract and go out on loan the the Championship to get some game time, there are now rumours that a second Tottenham first-team squad member is going to go out on loan, 19-year-old (20 in December) Cameron Carter-Vickers.
The USA Under-23 international centre-back is reported to be close to a loan move to Championship side Sheffield United, who were promoted last year and who gave us a tough battle in the League Cup a couple of seasons back.
Does this show a change of policy from Pochettino? It was thought Onomah might be a one-off with Pochettino stating he liked to keep players with him rather than loan them. The problem with that is that players then don't play enough and regardless of development, players like to play. If they don't, then mentally they slack off and that affects training.
If a player comes despondent by only constant training then they can become unsettled and want a move, a loan goes some way to allaying that problem. It is a big issue with young players and we have battled to keep Marcus Edwards for the last couple of years, presumably because he feels he deserves more chances at a higher level, given the success of a player like Dele Alli.
It is just another problem Mauricio Pochettino has to manage, player expectation.
