As Theresa May’s so-called Brexit deal nears the point at which Britain and the EU can make some sort of joint declaration to the world, it is becoming clear that, whatever the deal entails, it will not be as good as the deal negotiated over the decades under the premierships of Ted Heath, Harold Wilson, Margaret Thatcher, Tony Blair and Gordon Brown. So Brexiteers are getting their denials in early.
We know who you are, thanks
One of those denying any responsibility the loudest has been, to no surprise at all, TalkRADIO host Julia Hartley Brewer, who has been performing a series of logic leaps and whataboutery specials in order to prove to the world - very loudly and publicly - that she bears no responsibility for the shit show about to be visited on the UK.
So it was that Ms Hartley Dooda took time out from Retweeting Bernard Jenkin, Stewart Jackson, Master Harry Cole, the perpetually thirsty Paul Staines, and London’s formerly very occasional Mayor Alexander Boris de Pfeffel Johnson, to upbraid Desperate Dan Hodges. “I’m not sure why Brexiteers should be blamed for a deal that isn’t actually Brexit” she trilled. Loudly. And there was, unfortunately, more.
Hodges, for once, made the very valid point that those who backed Leave started the ball rolling, so ultimately they owned the fallout. Ms Hartley Dooda wasn’t having that. “So, all of us who made up the 17.4 million who voted “the wrong way” in the EU referendum are now somehow responsible for a Remain-backing PM, Chancellor & civil service delivering a Brexit deal that makes a mockery of our vote? Yeah, sure, that seems legit”.
No thanks, I don’t want to look over there. In the meantime, Ms Hartley Dooda was kicking someone else: “Apparently Sarah isn’t a big fan of democratic votes”. Sarah isn’t saying anything of the sort. She is, like Hodges, telling the Leavers that they own the mess.
But now she had found her Holy Grail - someone with a lot more Twitter followers to snipe at. “For the purposes of accuracy @DeborahMeaden we have this thing in democratic ballots where we only count the physical votes that are actually cast rather than the votes that weren’t. Or maybe you’d prefer it if we just, you know, based the result on your best guess?” Ms Meaden hadn’t said otherwise. It was all getting a little bit obvious.
Then came the pièce de résistance, backing another victimhood expert. “This fabulous young woman @LowTaxChloe who refuses to be the ‘victim’ that the Left insist all women must be, deserves better than this. Send her some support and take on her abusers as your good deed for the day”. Chloe Westley isn’t being abused. Her deeply unpleasant organisation is being called out for its dishonest and uncaring policies.
It was left to Deborah Meaden to make the call. “I just knew it. Somehow it is those who voted against this mess who will he held responsible for this mess. No one would have negotiated a better deal...she’s not my favourite but May has done her very best. Take responsibility and stop blaming others including the EU”. Got it in one.
Never mind the bluster, Ms Hartley Dooda. What Brexit would you favour, and show your working with a full benefit/cost analysis. Then explain the economy tanking.
Brexiteers are getting nervous. Because this foul-up is their fault, and no-one else’s.
