The wage bill realities that dictate football are overlooked by most fans.

The wage bill of any club dictates what they can achieve. Since the Premier League began it has been won by people, all but once, with more money than Tottenham and a higher wage bill, Same with the FA Cup and League Cup, they are generally won by teams with a higher wage bill, although Liverpool have been winning nothing.

Better players require better wages, we know that and for Spurs to keep our better players we have to increase our income to afford higher wages. The money isn't there otherwise, despite dreamland fans thinking it is.

The fantasists think because Jow Lewis has money it is automatically Tottenham's money to spend, which is absurd. His money is his own and nothing to do with Spurs, he is under no obligation to spend it on this club. The sooner fantasists understand that the better.

An owner is no longer allowed to spend money on players, he can give loans, which must be aid back, but Financial Fair Play is enforced to ensure clubs live within their means, in other words, they have to live on the money the club generates for itself.

The non-homegrown quota discussed in other articles is the current stumbling block, we can have 17 and we already have 17, thus common sense tells us some have to go to bring some in.

Returning to the wage bill, the figures below show the situation and the battle we have against the other clubs. It also shows why a player would not immediately choose to come to Tottenham, after baring in mind overseas players look overseas to get easier access to the Champions League.

Then they look to the Premier League, unless they are money orientated, in which case they are possibly the wrong player anyway.

We have to sign players who want a chance and want to improve and we continue to look to carve out that niche in the Premier League top six.

Fans expecting us to just throw money to sign someone or take a hit on a load of players are simply ignoring the realities of the football industry. Business pays for football, not the other way around. Build the business and you'll build the football, not the other way around.

Who says so, Sir Alex Ferguson. Do you know more than Sir Alex Ferguson? No, you don't.

Arsenal
Turnover: £427m
Wages: £199m
Wages % of turnover: 47%

Chelsea
Turnover: £368m
Wages: £221m
Wages % of turnover: 60%

Liverpool
Turnover: £364m
Wages: £208m
Wages % of turnover: 57%

Manchester City
Turnover: £473m
Wages: £264m
Wages % of turnover: 56%

Manchester United
Turnover: £581m
Wages: £263m
Wages % of turnover: 45%

SPURS
Turnover: £306m
Wages: £127m
Wages % of turnover: 42%

SPURS turnover is £306m
Manchester United wage bill £263m (455 of turnover)
Manchester City wage bill £264m (56% of turnover)

A graphic example of how we can not compete on wages, which are the driving force of football.

We have a new stadium we are building and we are having to pay for out of our £306m income. We are told the stadium will not affect transfers and it won't as long as we stick to the projected budgets we have for each aspect of running the club.

Our turnover is £275m LESS than Manchester United, they have nearly DOUBLE our income, without a stadium to build.

Our turnover is £172m LESS than Manchester City, more than our wage bill and they have no stadium to build.

Our turnover is £121m LESS than that of Arsenal, which is nearly our entire wage bill and again they have no stadium to build.

Our turnover is now £62m LESS than Chelsea, who have a high wage bill to turnover and who would have had to adjust that if they were to build a new stadium. That has been abandoned. Financially, with the stadium to pay for, we can not afford to pay 60%of income on wages.

Our turnover is £58m LESS than Liverpool now, who again with no stadium to build pay out a high percentage in wages, 57%. If you want to know why they can sign players, there is your answer, they throw wages at players, not something we can do.

The reality as opposed to the fantasy.
