Were you to read only the outpourings of our free and fearless press, especially the right-leaning part of it, your conclusion as to where the terrorism growth industry was at right now could have only one conclusion: it would all be about Scary Muslims™. That’s what the Sun, Mail, Express, Telegraph, and Times would tell you. It’s what magazines like the Spectator would tell you. And it would be plain flat wrong.
Because the terrorism growth industry right now is at Far Right Terrorism. White Supremacist Terrorism. Or, as it will now be called, Gammon Terrorism™. When a van was driven into a crowd near Finsbury Part Mosque, killing one man and injuring several others, this was a symptom of that new terrorism. Darren Osborne was not the only one out there on the far right wanting to kill people.
Thomas Mair, who murdered Labour MP Jo Cox and is now serving an indefinite prison sentence as a result, was another symptom of burgeoning Gammon Terrorism™, as was Britain First, the group he represented. Also, the behaviour of the press in legitimising far right terror was by them becoming clear. But the terrorist group that has taken over at the forefront of this disturbing trend is National Action.
Almost a year ago, the Guardian reported that “Counter-terrorism detectives have arrested 11 suspected members of a banned neo-Nazi group amid fears of a possible plot to target individuals. Officers made the arrests across England and Wales in a series of co-ordinated raids as part of efforts to thwart National Action. A counter-terrorism chief said the neo-Nazi group was being treated as seriously as those committed to jihadist acts”.
This was not an isolated occurrence: in January, the Independent noted that “Six alleged members of the neo-Nazi terrorist group National Action have been arrested on suspicion of terror offences. Five men and a woman were detained in coordinated dawn raids across the Midlands are being held for questioning. Five specialist counter-terror units were involved in the raids and investigators are continuing to search the suspects’ homes”.
And now have come yet more arrests: as the BBC has reported, “Five people including a 17-year-old boy have been arrested on suspicion of being members of a banned far-right group … Two men from Birmingham aged 22 and 28, a 23-year-old man and 22-year-old woman from Halifax and the teenager from Nottingham are being held by police in the West Midlands … They are suspected of being members of National Action.”
Forget what the press is telling you. When it comes to fomenting disturbance - as with recent “protests” in London which ended up in violent clashes with Police and several arrests - it is always the white supremacist far-right. The so-called Football Lads Alliance and its splinter groups are on a similar journey. So are groups like Generation Identity. And so, whisper it quietly, are far-right politicians across Europe.
Remember that the next time one of the overfilled roster of unsavoury pundits starts banging on about Scary Muslims™. The growing problem, the real and present danger, is now Gammon Terrorism™. Just like the 1930s. Be afraid. Be very afraid.
