Our free and fearless press loves nothing better than to just make up stories: it’s cheap, it’s quick, and the scope for creative writing is endless. And as the Royal family sticks to the old adage “never complain, never explain”, they have become prime targets for this particular brand of dishonesty, with the Murdoch goons at the Super Soaraway Currant Bun being especially adept at trowelling on the porkies.
Having learned nothing from their pursuit of Diana, Princess of Wales - her untimely death brought one of the most memorable press U-Turns of all time as the Fourth Estate went from an almost sadistic, sneering pursuit to fawning reverence literally overnight - the latest target is the Duchess of Sussex. This, though, is not at all related to her ability to connect with ordinary people, or that she is not white. Honestly.
So it was that the Sun declared “MEGHAN Markle has been branded ‘Duchess Difficult’ by Palace insiders as her demands become too much for aides, according to reports … It comes after the Sun revealed how the Duchess of Cambridge told Meghan not to berate members of her team after she ‘b****cked’ a member of staff”. Allegedly. Only after all of that did readers get “The row, which has been denied by the Palace”.
Having then talked up the Kate and Meghan rift, Christmas Day brought a problem. As both Royals arrived at the Christmas Day service at the church near to Sandringham, it was glaringly obvious that there was no rift. So the Sun had to explain that away, with the lying becoming more difficult and therefore less credible.
“KATE and Meghan called a Christmas truce on the orders of the Queen and Prince Charles”. Really? “A source said: ‘The Queen and Charles have allowed the situation to play out without overtly interfering - but they both made it clear that Christmas was for the whole family to really come together”. A source said. No. The Sun just made it up.
And the inmates of the Baby Shard bunker were unable to leave it there. After all, it must have hurt to have the Royals demonstrate to well-wishers and TV cameras that Rupe’s downmarket troops had been selling their readers a crock of crap. So back they then came with what they claim is the proof that they were right all along.
First came “while it may have appeared that the two feuding sisters-in-law had put aside their differences for the sake of the festive season, body language expert Judi James claims Kate and Meghan's uncharacteristically friendly display was simply for the sake of the cameras”. A “body language expert”. No investigative journalism needed.
Now, readers are told “despite the Duchesses reportedly putting on a united front during an appearance on Christmas Day, royal fans think they saw Prince William ‘ignore’ his sister-in-law Meghan”. Someone on Twitter thinks they saw something. And someone else on Instagram thought they saw something, too. This is truly desperate stuff.
The tabloid press, with the Sun in the vanguard, has run a whole slew of malicious drivel about the Duchess of Sussex. Now they’ve been shown to have lied to their readers, they’re too full of crap to come clean and admit it. So they lie a bit more.
And then they wonder why the public don’t trust them. I’ll just leave that one there.
