Today is the first day of Britain’s latest extension to the Article 50 process. A whole six months during which Theresa May can kick the can down the road, try in vain to persuade the Commons to pass a deal it has already rejected three times, blame Labour for the mess entirely of her own making, and most likely be the subject of an attempt by her own party to remove her from 10 Downing Street.
Squeaky terminal ineptitude finger up the bum time
But she is not the only show in town, and to remind us that he is still a thing, back has come former UKIP Oberscheissenführer Nigel “Thirsty” Farage to formally launch his new vanity vehicle the Brexit Party. Nige no longer wants anything to do with the Kippers and new leader Adolf von Batten’s appetite for forthright bigotry. Much more to Farage’s liking is the good old-fashioned nod-and-wink low-level racism he knows and loves.
So it was that the Brexit Party Twitter feed told the world yesterday “Brexit is being betrayed. Join The Brexit Party launch from 11am tomorrow on our livestream for a chance to change politics for good”. And to that I call bullshit. Farage has had 20 years in the European Parliament to “change politics” and he has changed nothing. He likes it that way.
And it got worse: as Led By Donkeys has had to point out, the Brexit Party has a teensy problem - Farage and his pals Richard “perma-smile” Tice, Andy Wigmore and Arron “diamond geezer” Banks have between them managed not to register the most obvious domain name for themselves. “Big day ahead for @Nigel_Farage and his new Brexit Party as he launches his European election campaign. Shame he forgot to register the website”.
Instead, at thebrexitparty.com we can read “Nigel Farage wants to register a huge victory in the European elections, but he can't even register his own website … Seven times he’s failed to get elected to Westminster. But he did get himself a seat in the European Parliament because at the time hardly any of us cared … Well we do now”.
So? “Nobody is more responsible than Farage for the diminished state of our nation. Now he’s seeking to exploit the turmoil he himself created to get re-elected to Brussels on the 23rd May … Register to vote by May 7th to stop him”. Curses! Foiled by those ghastly Remainers! Still, there was always thebrexitparty.eu, wasn’t there?
Sadly not. Tim Strickland had put paid to that one, with the site telling “Nigel Farage might have the FBI breathing down his neck, but that hasn’t stopped him forming a brand new party. With only both the two major UK parties committed to carrying out Brexit, we need another party which will be even more brexitty and even more committed to carrying out Brexit, whatever the cost. The public seem to be going off the idea for some reason, so we need a new party to whip up the hot frothy support of permanently angry idiots”.
As Steve Bray might have said, it’s not going too well, is it? With Peter Oborne’s admission that he was wrong in backing the Leave campaign being followed by a concession from LBC’s arch-Gammon Nick Ferrari that Brexit is no longer worth the candle, Farage is fighting for a shrinking slice of the electorate with Batten and his street fighters. Expect the Brexit Party’s launch rally in Birmingham tomorrow to be less than well attended.
Nigel Farage was for a time, but not for all time. Just rejoice at that news.
