The voices of Middle England are beside themselves with outrage this morning, as they bring the news that the Rotten Lefties™ have once again been unspeakably ghastly to someone. Except they haven’t: Jeremy Corbyn has declined an invitation to a state banquet, because the guest of honour will be Combover Crybaby Donald Trump.
That the alleged President of the USA is a racist bigot of no known principle, a creepy misogynist whose wife is uncomfortable in his company, a congenital liar whose propensity for dishonesty is the stuff of legend, and someone who encourages violence against journalists is ignored as our free and fearless press works its way into an advanced state of apoplexy. “CORBYN’S SNUB TO THE QUEEN” shrieks the Daily Mail.
He does? “He’s accused of hypocrisy after turning down her invitation to a state dinner with Trump”. Well, quite. Who’d want to dine with someone named after a wet fart? Meanwhile, the increasingly desperate and downmarket Telegraph was on the same page, sniffing “Corbyn accused of hypocrisy as he snubs Trump state banquet”.
But this is so much drivel. For starters, the invites may indeed bear the name of Her Maj (Gawd Bless ‘Er!), but the state visit, along with the guest list for the feed, come courtesy of Theresa May and her team in 10 Downing Street. Also, Jezza is not the only party leader to decline the invite - Vince Cable of the Lib Dems has also said no.
On top of that, Commons Speaker John Bercow has also turned down the dubious honour of hearing the official spokesman for Fox News Channel (fair and balanced my arse) pretending he gives a crap about anyone except Himself Personally Now.
What, though, of the hypocrisy claim? What does the Mail have to say for itself? Ah yes, “Despite his record of meeting terrorists and extremists”. There is, though, a teensy problem with that one, but to find out what it is, we must nip over to the Guardian.
While Jezza said firmly “Theresa May should not be rolling out the red carpet for a state visit to honour a president who rips up vital international treaties, backs climate change denial and uses racist and misogynist rhetoric”, he added “I would welcome a meeting with President Trump to discuss all matters of interest”. Meeting, yes. Banquet, no.
This is not a difficult concept to understand - unless, of course, you’re producing outrage copy for the Mail or Telegraph. Nor is the teensy problem of Theresa May’s willingness to grovel before the administration in Riyadh: Saudi Arabia is a brutal abuser of human rights, an exporter of terrorism, and a participant in the cruel and deadly conflict in Yemen.
That, of course, is ignored in the press’ rush to put the boot into Corbyn for being hypocritical, although he has not been. But good of those who scrabble around the dunghill that is Grubstreet to give the Labour leader so much free publicity.
