Australia: Women main target of Islamophobia - report finds

A study has found that Muslim women are the main targets of Islamophobic abuse in Australia.

The report has found that almost 80% of women were wearing some sort of head covering at the time of the abuse, and in 30% of cases, a child was present.

More than 240 Islamophobic incidents have been documented over 15 months in Australia with a large number occurring in public places, according to a study to be released at NSW Parliament.

The study of online and offline incidents released by the Islamophobia Register Australia between September 2014 and December 2015 also found people intervened in incidents perpetrated in public places at very low rates.
