Crossing is a weakness for Spurs-linked left-back Barreca

TRANSFER TALK

The Italian press suggest Spurs and Monaco have made offers of around £16.11 million (€18m - AUS$26.41m - US$21.07m) for 22-year-old (23 next March) Torino left-back Antonio Barreca.

Barreca, who is a promising talent and of interest to Monchi at Roma too, is under contract until 2021 having signed a contract extension in November.

With Danny Rose and Ben Davis at left-back, at first glance it would seem that we don't need another. There is a section who complain about Ben Davies but he was our left-back for several months at the end of the season and we finished second in the league, so he can't that bad.

I wonder though, if we are going to play with a back three, whether we are considering players for a more attack minded wing back role. He has played 94 games at left-back, 25 as a left-sided midfielder and 2 games as a right-back. However, he has only played 28 Serie A games, most of his game time has been in Serie B.

Whoscored list his weaknesses as crossing, tackling and passing, three rather essential elements if he is to play as a wing-back or a full-back for that matter in our systems.

Given his contract length and, therefore, that he is at maximum market value I don't see us doing any more than watch him at this stage. If Mauricio Pochettino has settled on a back three and sees Ben Davies as cover for Jan Vertonghen instead of Kevin Wimmer, although reports suggest he rates Wimmer and wants to keep him, then there is a case for looking for cover for the wing-back role.

As we don't know Pochettino's plans, we played one half with a back three and one with a back four against Roma, it makes assessing the situation difficult.
