UK: Birmingham Council caves to Indian High Commission pressure, bans Kashmir martyr rally


The council has now withdrawn its backing and cancelled the gathering after concerns were raised about the posters and after the Indian government made an official objection to the UK.

Leading separatist Burhan Wani, 22, was killed in the disputed region one year ago this weekend

A Birmingham rally to commemorate the death of a Kashmiri separatist leader has been banned just days before it was due to take place.

Burhan Wani, 22, was killed in the disputed region one year ago this weekend, when he was commander of the Hizbul Mujahideen separatist group.

His death in the Indian-controlled Northern Kashmir sparked violent protests, leaving dozens more dead.

Wani had been a leader of Hizbul Mujahideen, a Kashmir separatist group which has reportedly been classed as a terrorist organisation by the European Union, the US and India.
