Police are looking for possible suspects who put two Qurans in the toilet of a bathroom at the University of Texas at Dallas between 6 p.m. and 7 p.m. on March 28.
Police are trying to identify one person among six people seen in surveillance video who went to the restroom in the student union during that time frame, Chief Larry Zacharias said.
The occurrence was "very unusual" for a school with a diverse population, he said.
"Given the current political climate and how Muslims are portrayed in the media, it makes certain individuals act in this hateful way," Muslim Student Association president Mohammad Syed told The Mercury.
A reflection room for spiritual or religious practice is on the first floor of the union where people often donate books and materials, but Zacharias said people who went into the room around that time on March 28 left empty-handed.
