TRANSFER TALK
Benfica are said to be interested in potential Tottenham target Jeremy Toljan, the versatile German Under-21 defender who can play as a full-back on either side.
The 22-year-old (23 in August) Hoffenheim man is said to prefer a move to the Premier League and is out of contract at the end of the season, thus will be available at a bargain price, just the sort of deal we keep our eyes open for.
Hoffenheim director of football Alex Rosen spoke to German newspaper Bild and mentioned that they couldn't compete with the wages that could be offered in the Premier League.
“If Tottenham come in and offer to treble Toljan’s salary, you cannot say: ‘London is an unattractive city or Tottenham are a bad club.’ This is all very positive, and then young people think about it.”It is the German paper who suggest his transfer value is £3.13 million (€3.5m - AUS$5.14m - US$4.08m) which seems low, even taking into account his contract situation. He has also been linked with Chelsea, Napoli and Roma.
He fits the profile of the players we are looking for to constantly build our squad over the long term. He is highly thought of in Germany and at 1.82 m (6 ft 0 in) has the height to operate in a back-three. he is also qualifies to play for the USA and Croatia but has chosen to stick with Germany where there is a vacancy at right-back waiting to be filled ahead of the World Cup next summer.
Serge Aurier is still an option although a meeting when we met PSG the other night saw a difference in transfer fees. We refuse to go above £17.87 million (€20m - AUS$29.36m - US$23.35m) including add-ons while PSG are demanding £26.8 million (€30m - AUS$44.05m - US$35.03m).
Once again that price we feel isn't right for us and we will wait while the window runs down to apply pressure to them to accept a lower fee. Our supposed inactivity, is our activity. all standard negotiating tactics. Just as a season is viewed over a season and not in the first week, so this transfer window is viewed over the whole summer.
We have the same situation with Ross Barkley, although he is now injured which adds to bargaining power, as does his desire to play under Pochettino. If we know he is adamant on coming to Spurs, and we will know, then forcing his price down is sensible. The same applies to other players, but not being a party to those discussions we don't have all the facts, we don't know what players and agents have told Spurs.
The window closes at the end of August, there is no rush and no need to panic.
