TOTTENHAM TALK
To say I was disappointed by the result against Burnley would be an understatement, I even took a day off, much to the delight of some no doubt. All was content, yes things could be improved upon, but the final 10 minutes was the old Spurs.
WE now play with a high line, the old Spurs used to drop back and play on the penalty box, when time after time we would then concede a late goal. That was nerves, there was a panic and a lack of mental strength.
For all the strides we have made mentally, we were closing out games at White Hart Lane last season, against Burnley we looked nervous again, we looked disorganised and mistakes creeping in. That is a mentality issue and that has to be certain players with a Wembley complex.
While I don't believe in a Wembley hoodoo or a Wembley jinx as the national press like to promote, I do believe some of our players do have mental issues with Wembley that they have to resolve. When Mauricio Pochettino came out furious we hadn't seen out the game I was in complete agreement.
For me, we didn't try to kill the game, we were not keeping the ball as we did at White Hart Lane, we were not passing it around on a bigger pitch with more space. Kieran Trippier for example was playing punts up field giving the ball to the opposition, the exact opposite of what was needed at the time.
A win to ease the mental pressure on some is essential as we now have put pressure on ourselves to be a top side away from home. Solve our mental issues at home and we ease the pressure away, a player like Serge Aurier will help that, having played regularly in big stadia around Europe at club level.
While we have experience in our young side, we don't have much experience of Europe's major stadiums, which brings a pressure all of it's own, as we are finding out. I don't think our fans helped, too many spectators and not enough involved singing.
That is an issue we will have to address in the new stadium and that will need people who are passionate about Spurs.
