I want people to learn about Islam from those who practice its teachings. I am optimistic that this kind of letter can prevent hate crimes because the best prevention for hatred is open-mindedness.

On June 17, the Ahmadiyya Muslim Community held an interfaith Iftar dinner at Bait-us-Salam Mosque in Hawthorne.
The highlight of the event was the feeling that despite our differences we must unite for peace.
A day later I read the horrific news of the murder in Virginia of a 17-year-old Muslim teen, Nabra Hassanen. Darwin Martinez Torres, 22, was charged with her murder. I wholeheartedly condemn this crime. My heartfelt prayers are for the family and friends.
Her death brings more personal connection to me because I, too, am a Muslim woman who dons the hijab. I also walk to the mosque every day for breaking-the-fast dinner and the five daily prayers. I am not worried that I might get killed on the way. I am more troubled by the hate-fueled crime toward someone who looks different, particularly Muslims and people of color. I am worried about the moral standard of my fellow Americans.
