Memorial Day is one of the most highly regarded holidays in the U.S., honoring those who died serving in the armed forces. From its origination back in 1868 after the Civil War until today, Americans celebrate this day in the honor of all those brave individuals.

As immigrants, my family and I are grateful for the liberties and freedoms provided to us, with the freedom of religion being very dear to us. I understand that none of this could ever be possible without the sacrifices of those brave men and women in our armed forces. Many Muslim Americans feel so strongly about the liberties afforded us, they serve in the armed forces to further secure our American ideals.

The Holy Prophet has said, “Love of one’s country is a part of faith” (Sakhavi). Keeping that point of view in mind the worldwide Head of the Ahmadiyya Muslim Community, His Holiness Mirza Masroor Ahmad has stated, “As citizens of any country, we Ahmadi Muslims, will always show absolute love and loyalty to the State... Whenever a country requires its citizens to make sacrifices the Ahmadiyya Muslim Community will always be ready to bear such sacrifices.”

We also implore our leaders, our representatives in this democratic government, to operate on principles of justice and to always strive to prevent the loss of innocent life. The recent U.S. arms deal with UAE gives me cause for concern; we should strive for love instead of more war.
